After recalling the concepts of matrix in echelon form and of elementary operation (for either rows or columns), two basic utilities derived from Gaussian elimination are presented, pointing out in each case if the permitted elementary operations only act on the rows or only act on the columns, or can act on both rows and columns at the same time. These utilities are: invertibility of a square matrix and inverse matrix in the invertible case; systems of linear equations. With examples and a quick test (editable pptx).
